Deciduous Dancer

Watching the wind sway through the trees on a spectacular autumn day on the Blue Ridge Parkway, it struck me that this tree in particular resembled a folk or Spanish-inspired dancer of some kind, the arrangement of limbs and the striking golden leaves swaying in the wind looking like layers and tiers of fabric of skirts and scarves, twirling and floating around a dancer completely lost in the music and the moment. Appalachian Homestead

Autumn 1996, Appalachian Mountains. I love the image of this pond and field in a small valley deep in the Appalachians. Between the trees you can barely see the roof of a building, maybe a house or outbuilding. It looks so cozy, nestled in, with this fantastic view on all sides. Fog Over Franklin

Taken in early fall 1999, this is one of my "non-standard" Appalachian shots. There is no landmark or park shown here, this is just taken at an overlook on Hwy 64 looking toward Franklin. I love autumn - one of the few seasons the haze is low in the Appalachians, and just about the only season that there's any color of interest and low haze. I was surprised to catch this since it was around noon when I took this picture - late in the day for fog, especially at this altitude.
