Dianne Borde-Sutherland - Maiolica Pottery

My Maiolica Pottery I began in 1975 to explore the wonders of clay. Since that time, my involvement and commitment has taken me to many countries across the globe to show and teach about my work. Highlights of my training and experience include UWI, Trinidad, and many workshops and seminars over the years. My work is shown at galleries and exhibitions across the country, as well as in numerous private collections. The main focus of my work presently, is with producing useful and ornamental pieces made of red earthenware clay and maiolica glazed. This technique is ancient and was developed in Mesopotamia around 900 BC then spread throughout the Muslim world ending up in Spain and Portugal via the North African Arabs during the 14th Century . An important part of my work is to produce items that are visually attractive in form and function. Because of the nature and firing temperature of the clay used, these pieces of pottery are not designed for use on the stove top elements or in microwave ovens. The glaze, stains and pigments used do not contain lead and are food safe. I hope you will enjoy using these pieces as much as I?ve enjoyed making them.
